What Project Cargo Operation Did SCL Coordinate?
Sea Cargo Logistics (SCL), in collaboration with a freight forwarding partner based in Argentina, coordinated the transportation of a Firewater Pump House from Ciudad Mitras,Nuevo León, Mexico, to Buenos Aires, Argentina, as part of a strategic project for Vaca Muerta.
The operation combinedspecialized inland transportation from origin to the Port of Altamirawith breakbulk ocean transportation to the Port of Buenos Aires. Based on reference distances for both stages, the cargo covered approximately 8,100 kilometers from origin to destination.
What Made the Cargo Particularly Challenging?
The Firewater Pump House weighed42 tons, but the main challenge was defined by its dimensions rather than its weight. The unit measured 16.30 m long, 4.02 m wide and 5.06 m high. The 5.06-meter height was especially significant. Moving a piece with this profile required the transport strategy to be designed around route feasibility, handling requirements and the space the cargo would occupy during the ocean leg. This was not simply heavy cargo; it was an oversized unit whose dimensions affected every stage of the operation.
How Was the Inland Transportation Planned?
Before movingthe cargo, SCL carried out a route survey from Ciudad Mitrasto the Port of Altamirato assess the feasibility of the inland move and define the transportation strategy. With the route evaluated, the team coordinated the pickup and inland transportation to Altamira, preparing the cargo for a maritime solution specifically designed around its dimensions. Timing, route conditions, handling and safety all had to be considered before the unit reached the port.
How Was the Ocean Shipment Executed?
From the Port of Altamira, Mexico,to the Port of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the cargo was shipped as breakbulk aboard a container vessel operating a liner service. Instead of using a standard container configuration, the unit was transported on a bed of eight flat rack containers. Because of the space required by the oversized piece, the arrangement occupied 48 lost slots on the vessel.This stowage solutionwas a direct response to the cargo dimensions and allowed the unit to be accommodated on a liner service despite being far outside standard container parameters. The projectwas carried out in collaboration with our freight forwarding partner in Argentina, integrating the international execution with local coordination at destination.
