Project Overview

For an Austrian industrial furnace manufacturer, ILG coordinated the international project logistics for the construction of a new steel manufacturing facility in the United States.
Approximately 35,000 freight tons of industrial components were transported from multiple production sites across Austria and Europe to the project site in the USA.

The cargo included oversized and heavy-lift components with widths exceeding 4 metres and individual weights of more than 50 tons.
All deliveries had to be integrated into a strict construction schedule and delivered in accordance with predefined installation sequences.

Key Challenges

Tight Schedule & Sequential Deliveries

The project was subject to significant time pressure. Components had to arrive not only on time but also in the exact sequence required for installation in order to avoid disruptions to the construction schedule.

Baltimore Bridge Collapse

Following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, a large number of heavy-lift cranes in the region were reassigned to recovery and reconstruction activities. As a result, cargo handling capacities became limited, requiring flexible planning and continuous coordination throughout the project.

Multiple European Origins

The cargo originated from several manufacturing locations across Austria and Europe. Coordinating production schedules, pre-carriage operations and ocean transport required precise supply chain management and close collaboration with all project stakeholders.

Logistics Solution

ILG developed a tailor-made project logistics concept covering the entire transport chain. During the planning phase, transport routes were analysed, route surveys conducted and potential risks identified early.

Depending on size and weight, cargo was transported from the manufacturing sites to the ports by specialised trucks or inland waterways. The transatlantic transport was mainly performed using RoRo vessels, ensuring a reliable and efficient transport solution for oversized project cargo.

To guarantee quality and transparency throughout the project, ILG teams supervised key handling operations, conducted surveys and monitored cargo condition during loading and discharge operations. Close cooperation with local partners in the United States ensured smooth last-mile transportation and on-site coordination.

Results

The project was completed successfully despite the operational challenges and tight deadlines.

  • Zero cargo damage
  • 100% on-time delivery
  • Project completed within budget
  • Reliable supply chain throughout the entire project duration

The project demonstrates how detailed planning, technical expertise and a strong international partner network are critical for the successful execution of complex industrial logistics projects.
