ShipEx Logistics: The Story of Big Mama

Salt Lake City, UTShipEx Logistics was presented recently with the challenging task of transporting a distillation column from Dalian, China to Bakersfield, California.

The shipper at the plant in China appropriately named the column ” BIG MAMA” 60′ Long x 19′ Wide x 19″ High – 76,000 lbs.

The transport involved – inland transport in China to the port of Dalian, loading the unit onto a bed of 8 collapsible 40′ flat racks on board a container vessel, ocean freight to terminal island, Long Beach port, live transfer of unit off of vessel directly to barge, transport barge to SSA terminal and transfer Big Mama to 13 axle-perimeter-trailer. Upon receiving the completed approvals from the state of California and over 20 municipalities for their route surveys and permits BIG MAMA was ready to roll with the final leg of her journey in the United States.

Big MAMA was escorted on her final journey by a team of 6 California Highway patrol escorts, 4 wire lifters bucket trucks, 2 traffic light lifter trucks.  The Big MAMA Caravan travelled at night and in 3 days reached her new home at the energy plant in Bakersfield, CA.

The ShipEx project management team was also on site supervising the entry and unloading of BIG MAMA at her new home.

The team of shipper, ocean carriers, China agents, Port Captains, Customs, Longshoremen, crane operators, tug captain, barge operators, Heavy Hauler, California department of transportation, California Highway Patrol, Escorts, riggers and pant manager site were all instrumental in the successful transport and delivery of Big MAMA to her new home.
