FLS Projects Ship Break Bulk on Container Vessel
When a client of two major civil construction projects on the US West Coast approached FLS, requesting them to move two time-critical cargoes for these projects, a perfect solution was found: shipping the cargo as break bulk on a container vessel.
Time and costs were crucial for their customer, so instead of chartering a multipurpose break bulk vessel on a last-in/ first-out direct sailing, the team opted for a container service.
Structural beams of up to 30 meters in lengths and weighing up to 40 tons presented big challenges for the loading and unloading operations on an 11,000 -TEU container vessel. But working in close coordination with the carrier and terminals and crane operators, a solution of using a combination of mobile and gantry cranes was found.
The benefits of using a container vessel for break bulk as opposed to a regular break bulk vessel were the better transit times and the more reliable and regular shipping schedules. Also, commercially smaller lots will not attract the sometimes-high inducement freight rates of break bulk vessels.
Due to the benefits above, shipping break bulk on a container vessel is becoming more common and FLS have the expertise to provide well-fitting solutions for both time and budgetary restraints.
